Long Island City (L.I.C.) is the westernmost neighborhood of Queens. Broad roadways lend the neighborhood a sprawling and somewhat barren feel. Abandoned factory buildings have transformed into galleries and show spaces by artists that have moved there in large quantities. Once an industrial hub, it is now a true haven for artists and performers. Long Island City is serviced by the 7 train that takes you to both Grand Central and Times Square within 15 minutes. A cab fare is reasonable and you can even travel by boat with the East River Ferry to East 34th Street. From Gantry Plaza (a 12-acre state park located on the river) you'll enjoy some of the best vistas of the entire Manhattan skyline.
