Most of SoHo (the area South of Houston street) is part of the landmarked Cast Iron Historic District, an area of ornate cast iron façades and cobblestone streets formerly home to 19th & 20th century light manufacturing. When artists moved in during the 1970s, SoHo quickly achieved trendy status and prices for the oversized loft spaces began to rise. Though some apartments still house artists, photographers and designers who often use it as their studio, nowadays celebrities, models and the occasional banker have taken over. SoHo is famous for its endless array of pricey boutiques and charming atmosphere. Beside the masses of people that flock Broadway and Spring streets, Soho’s picturesque blocks become quieter. The youthful crowd returns at night to fill the many famous bars and restaurants.
