Congratulations you got into New York University (NYU). That's great, but where are you going to live? Your best bets are Greenwich Village, West Village or East Village which are the primary neighborhoods to start looking for an apartment at walking distance from NYU and they have plenty of cheap eats and nightlife around. You will never need a cab! The townhouses and tenement buildings offer many studio, 1 bedroom and 2-4 bedroom layouts ideal for sharing with your class mates if necessary. Prepare to walk some stairs though, but that's always better than taking the train for an hour..
