The neighborhood is named for the mansion that steel magnate Andrew Carnegie built at Fifth Avenue and 91st Street in 1901. Carnegie Hill stretches from 79th to 98th Street between Fifth Avenue and Third Avenue. For many New Yorkers with families, this is the city’s preferred and most prestigious residential neighborhood. Major museums form the "Museum Mile" and fine schools are abundant, not to mention the proximity to Central Park, nice architecture and good public transportation. But what really draws them is the large supply of sizable apartments, mostly in pre-war buildings, along the avenues and cross streets. Madison Avenue offers many fine stores, friendly brunch places and children's clothing boutiques.
