East Village Neighborhood New York

Townhouses for sale in the East Village New York

The East Village is located North of Houston and South of 14th Street east of Broadway. Most of the available apartments are in pre-war walk-up buildings, many of which are now refurbished, but there several new residential buildings. In the good old days this was the home of squatters, punks, hippies and bikers. The influences of New York University (NYU) and the general surge in Manhattan incomes have transformed it into the home of students, artists and the first jobbers. As a direct consequence the East Village has seen the opening of hundreds of boutiques, art galleries, bars and restaurants. The main strips are St. Marks Place and Second Avenue. As stylish as it is, the East Village preserves a laid-back attitude so even outsiders feel welcome when in this classic New York City neighborhood. An interesting sub-section to the East Village is Alphabet City, named after avenues A-D. Apartments here are generally less expensive than in the rest of the area because of the longer walk to the subways.
